Margaret Magner, Ph.D, M.A., M.P.W.: Executive Director

Margaret Magner is Executive Director of the PEI Business Women’s Association. She has taught in Canadian and U.S. universities and held a number of positions, including Director of Development for the William J. Clinton Foundation; Presidential Speechwriter, Development Communications Senior Writer, and Corporate Relations Director at the University of Southern California; and Director of Bioscience Development at UPEI, where she continues to teach for the Faculty of Business and Department of English. Her company Magner Ink specializes in communication services. She is a Governor of the National Theatre School of Canada.


Mary Lou Bassett: Business Development and Membership Officer

Mary Lou Bassett is the Business Development and Membership Officer of the PEI Business Women's Association. She is an entrepreneur with over 20 years experience in the hospitality, skin care and property management industries. She recently completed her Executive MBA from the University of Prince Edward Island. In her new role, Mary Lou, who is conversant in English, French and Arabic, will build and strengthen PEIBWA's membership and serve as an advisor to help members solve business-related problems. Mary Lou also sits on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity PEI and says she has honed her negotiation skills with a lot of help from her three children.


Shelley Jessop: Rural Women's Business Centre Manager

Shelley Jessop is the Manager of the PEI Business Women's Association's Rural Women’s Business Centre in Central Bedeque. Shelley recently relocated to PEI and brings a diverse background of experience. She is a Certified Resume’ Strategist with 10 years of experience working in career and employment services, most recently with the YW Women’s Employment Resource Centre in Calgary, AB, where she supervised the centre and created programming to support women with achieving their career goals. With roots as a chemical technologist and entrepreneur, she was self-employed in rural Alberta for more than 10 years and has hands-on experience starting multiple businesses from the ground up, including a contracting company, farm-direct business raising lamb, and a clay art studio. Passionate about lifelong learning, she believes in the power of building strong communities of support to achieve business success.


Sparrow McGowan: Events and Communications Officer

Sparrow McGowan is the Events and Communications Officer of the PEI Business Women's Association. She has 15 years of experience spanning communications, marketing and events, in Canada and internationally.  She has worked with both the nonprofit and private sectors, with responsibilities for strategic communications, branding, media relations and social media, as well as overseeing the launch of numerous digital projects. Most recently, she was the Communications Manager for the Commonwealth of Learning, an international intergovernmental organization based in Vancouver, BC. Sparrow is also an active freelance writer, and holds a Masters in Journalism and a BA (Hon) in Environmental Studies.
